Chhon Meak
Hello! My name is Chhon. I was born in 1993. I graduated from university in 2019. I have no brothers and sisters. My parents got divorce when I was really young. Then, my parents had new families. I quit school when I was in sixth grade because of poverty. I had to live with my grandmother until I was 18 years old. As soon as I turned 18, I decided to become a monk so that I could study freely. I stayed in monkhood for nine years before joining TASSEL.
Growing up in a poor and broken family really taught me the real value of life. I learnt to love myself, solve life problems, have self-esteem, be kind, be reliable and live independently. I definitely understand how difficult it is to be born in a poor family. Therefore, I had a dream of becoming a social worker to help those in need.
I have been working at TASSEL since 2019. My life has changed a lot since I started working here. I can share my own life experiences to hopeless children to be hopeful, motivate and guard them to have higher education. I care not only for their education but also their physical and mental health. I always visit their families to find out their real situations. Some students don’t have enough food, clothes and transportation and they cannot come to school with an empty stomach and no clothes. Being a teacher at TASSEL, teaching English alone is not enough. I have to understand their current situations and be kind and be available whenever they need help.
All in all, I really love being a part of TASSEL because it changes many lives and it’s not only a normal organization but also, it’s like a home or family. For those who don’t receive enough love and care from their own families or don’t have a home or family can come to join us.
