Bunna Leng

I am Bunna leng. I was born on January 5, 1986, in Pou village, Tbeng Commune, Kampong Svay District, and Kampongthom province. I have six siblings, three brothers and  three sisters. I am the fifth child in my family. I got married in 2019. My parents are farmers. They are so old. However, my father still works as a scrap collector and scrap buyer from other villages for sale. My mother does not do anything, but stays at home. In fact, I became a monk in 1999. In 2005, I left my hometown and moved to Battambang in order to found a monastery to stay and study. In 2006, I started studying English at Association for Knowledge Development (AKD) and also I learned English in a monastery with monks, too. Luckily, I learned there for free without paying a school fee. I decided to study there because I was from a poor family. My parents could not afford for me to study in a private school or modern school.

Learning English is not easy for adults like me. As an adult, it was very hard to learn with small children in the class. The school was very far from my monastery. I always walked to school. It took me about fifteen minutes to get to school every day. More than that, I wanted to improve my English, so I worked as a volunteer English teacher to teach poor children at a small Association for 2 years. I finished high school in 2010. Happily, my dream came true, I had an opportunity to continue learning at University. My major is English. Being a monk for four years at University was very hard for me because my family situation was poor, so I had to save some money for the school fee. Finally, I graduated in 2014. After I graduated, I left monkhood. I worked as a teacher at Specialists International School (SIS) in Kandal province for 3 years. In 2018 I went back to my hometown to help my parents’ work for 1 year. Sadly, My life was very difficult working as a farmer in the paddyfield. I worked very hard from day to day.

Lately, my life has changed after I started working at TASSEL. I have been working at TASSEL since 2019. TASSEL is a non-organization that has been serving free high-quality English education to impoverished children in Cambodia. Education is the main point that is processing and helping the poor children to get good skills that are focused on English.  This is my first experience and it has made me change everything in my life. I have learned so much from TASSEL. All TASSEL teachers are kind, friendly, lovely, moral and helpful. TASSEL’s consistent guidance helps me to increase my potential in work. TASSEL showed me the path of a brighter world, which makes me able to grasp this opportunity. Working at TASSEL has been a privilege. TASSEL’s mentoring has shaped up my professional life. Even since I have started to work in TASSEL under the leadership of teacher Joji and all teachers; I have learned a lot which really helps me to become a better person. I have a lot of experience from TASSEL. Truly, I will sacrifice my best to change my poor country through teaching, education and sharing the advanced knowledge to the under generators to be better in the future. I love TASSEL so much.
